Electronic cigarettes

In a world where everything is set to become faster, cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and digital or electronic to boot, how can this possibly affect cigarette smoking, I hear you ask? Well actually, it is a far more environmentally-friendly option to consider.

An electronic cigarette is an alternative to the cigarette, providing small amounts of the chemical nicotine with each inhalation. The device takes the form of a tiny rod which is slightly longer than a normal cigarette. The mouthpiece of the device contains a replaceable cartridge filled with liquid. The main substances contained in the liquid are nicotine, propylene glycol, and is enhanced with optional flavors or aromas. When the user inhales through the device, the air flow is detected by a sensor.

A microprocessor then activates an atomizer, which injects tiny droplets of the liquid into the flowing air and vaporises the nicotine. This produces a vapour mist which is inhaled by the user. The addition of propylene glycol to the liquid makes the mist better resemble normal cigarette smoke. The microprocessor also activates an orange light emitting diode, or LED, at the tip to simulate real smoking. Electronic cigarettes generally use a rechargeable battery as a power source. Battery life varies between devices, with some lasting a day between charges, and others lasting a week.

Cartridges for electronic cigarettes are usually offered in a variety of formulations, with different flavours, namely fruit, mint, and coffee, and nicotine concentrations. At the upper range of nicotine concentrations, electronic cigarette smoking is equivalent in nicotine delivery to average tobacco cigarettes. Most companies also offer a range of milder options, including completely nicotine-free cartridges. Depending on the device, the solution cartridges are good for between one hundred to six hundred inhalations. An empty cartridge can be replaced with a new cartridge or it can be refilled with solution. This solution is sometimes called e-liquid and is often sold in bottles of ten millilitres.

Electronic cigarettes are generally considered to be a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking, since most of the harmful materials produced by the combustion of tobacco in traditional cigarettes is not present in the atomised liquid of an electronic cigarette.

They can also be used as a way to curtail an addiction to nicotine. Various toxicological studies of the electronic cigarettes have been conducted, with some concluding that electronic cigarettes are less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarettes, because they can deliver nicotine into the lungs without the carcinogens and toxicants. Nevertheless, the device still delivers nicotine.

With all the negative publicity surrounding the act or smoking, including a “Smoking Kills” campaign around the world, the emphasis on providing a healthier option, especially amongst teenagers is becoming a top priority. The electronic cigarette may well lead the way towards this end.

The upside of this is that anyone can light up now, among family and friends who are non-smokers, and be socially acceptable at the same time. In the United Kingdom, electronic cigarette use is currently unrestricted, with celebrity nightclub “Chinawhite” allowing use of the devices indoors, where traditional cigarette smoking is prohibited.

Smoking still in Vogue, italian style

Fashion and smoking have been inextricably linked for decades. Models smoke on catwalks (and not just when wearing Yves St Laurent’s iconic Le Smoking trouser suit) and in fashion spreads.

Supermodels such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss appear in the celebrity press smoking in “real life”.

And some fashion designers are happy to associate their brand and products with smoking, such as the ads for Gucci handbags that appeared in several top European fashion magazines last autumn showing cigarette ash “stylishly” scattered across their expensive bags.

It therefore was a surprise to many when earlier this year Italy, arguably the most fashion conscious and stylish country in the world, passed and implemented more comprehensive legislation on smoke-free public places.

Furthermore, the legislation appears to be working, with few breaches being reported. However, it would appear that some in the Italian fashion world are finding their addiction to tobacco more . . .

What is a cigarette?

There are many different sorts of cigarettes around the world. Smokers from different countries prefer cigarettes of different strength and with various smells and aromas.

Tobacco

As a rule, producers use various sorts of tobacco when they manufacture cigarettes. Tobacco is imported from different countries and it is combined in specified way in order to please different smell for smokers. The smell, aroma and taste of cigarettes depend on the kind of bag.

In the tobacco industry are used 3 main sorts of tobacco like: “Virginia”, “Barley” and Oriental.

The necessities of the smokers are different depending on in which country do they live. For example, in Great Britain, the smokers prefer cigarettes which are from English bag, which contain mainly the Virginia tobacco. In the USA, the smokers choose cigarettes from American bag, which composition includes all 3 sorts of tobacco.

Cigarettes Paper

It is used a special paper for cigarettes manufacturing. This special paper affects the stability of ashes forming and the level of smoking components which fall into the lungs of the smokers. This kind of paper is of high porosity, air permeability and it is used when are produced cigarettes with low content of gums.

Filter

Filter is destined to reduce the quantity of smoke and specified components which fall in smoker’s body. Majority of filters are made of organic fibers – cellulose. Cellulose doesn’t have it’s own taste and is sufficiently encrusted to hold the shape. Together with other elements of cigarettes construction, such as ventilation, filters usage with different efficiency of filtration permits to obtain various levels of content of smell and taste.

Ventilation
Cigarette is ventilated in order to lower the level of smoking components, first of all, gum, and nicotine and monoxide carbon. All cigarettes are ventilated at the expense of natural air permeability of cigarette’s paper. Moreover, many cigarettes are ventilated over perforation of filter’s fillet. In process of air inhaling, which enter over perforation, is combined with smoke which comes from decay zone of cigarette. Ventilation of the filter is the base and obligatory characteristics of cigarette with low content of gums.

Smoke

Tobacco’s smoke is the most complex and the most active studied mixture around the world. As many other natural substances, tobacco contains thousand components (at the moment are about 2500). During of tobacco burning depending on temperature and concentration of oxygen are generated about 4000 smoking substances. The concentration of many of them is extremely small.

The main plume - it is the smoke which falls into smokers’ respiratory system when he inhales, and secondary plume – the smoke which is exhaled from smolder end of cigarette.

The complex structure of cigarette smoke is one of difficulties which the scientists encounter when they decide to analyze the tobacco’s composition. So, in this case, they can’t decide which substances impact the health of the smokers, provoking lots of diseases related to smoking.

The manager of Duty Free market network James Richardson announced about cigarettes sharp rise in price. This action was determined by dollar price collapse and their products has all the prices in dollars. Magazine “Idiot Aeronaut” wrote about that on its pages.

More than that, the import of cigarettes will rise in price in Duty Free and their prices will be increased about 10%. The price for one carton will increase with 2$ and one box – with 10$.

Representatives of duty free network explained that in the last month they suffered considerable losses.

This thing happens because the bulk of goods on sale are imported from Europe.

Though, in spite of this price increasing, the administration of duty free network affirms that prices from their stores are as usual very profitable on the local market and much lower than in other airports in many countries of Europe. “The person that will find the cheapest product in Israeli shelling, will be able to receive it as a present” – promised the dealers.

CHRISTMAS Holiday with cigarettes

CHRISTMAS shoppers in USA are being warned to be on their guard for festive fakes after items worth £25,000 were seized in one week.

Trading Standards raids on markets and car boot sales have led to thousands of pounds worth of counterfeit goods including footwear, the latest DVDs and MP3 players, cigarettes, toys, and razor blades being seized.

The seizures include fakes of famous clothes brands including Nike, and latest film titles, including Beowulf and American Gangster.

Chief Trading Standards Officer Mr Jim Potts said: “Trading Standards have recently been given more powers to tackle counterfeits and bootlegs, and we aim to maintain a fair and safe trading environment by making Lancashire a no-go area for fakes.

“For those businesses who do abide by the law it is a real concern to see these traders are making money by offering shoddy products and avoiding the usual taxes levied on honest businesses.”

Smoking is hazardous for your health

40 years ago, in 1966, first appeared a frightening inscription on cigarette packs about the dangers of smoking.

Professionals believe that the slogan is the most inefficient social advertising in the world.

Nine Words “General Surgeon Warning: Smoking is hazardous for your health” occupied 4 - 5 % of the surface area of cigarette packets.

Experts on advertising say: this advertisement is so small even to read this slogan.

Sociological measurements in the EU countries have shown: the inscription and truth nobody reads.

To resolve this situation European Parliament and European committees decided to print on cigarette packs the pictures of damaged organs, such as rotten teeth or infected lungs. And to convince smokers about the real warning this picture occupied 40% of one side of cigarette packets.

Example is United States and Scandinavia, where in latest years there was an increase in number of smokers.

All progress has been made where the emphasis was not on a discouraging example, but there were bonuses promoted, which smokers received.

Self consumer basket during Clinton’s time was already full even without cigarettes.

Poor student got more pleasure from sport, sex and travel and increased his price than rush to get cigarettes or diet lunch and reduce his price.

When Bush began a campaign of premarital abstinence, many students returned to cigarettes and tight lunch. With this campaign they can’t travel with their girlfriend.

Social psychologists and doctors say in one voice: this horrible picture it is very inefficient.

An estimate made by sociologists say that up to half of doctors today are smoking. If your doctor is smoking how do expect not to smoke yourself.
